Flax and hemp fibers are very much alike. So alike, in fact that it’s difficult to tell them apart without a microscope. Both are bast fibers harvested from within the woody stalks of their respective plants. With superb properties including their unmatched durability, high-absorbency, quick drying, thermoregulating, and stain and debris resistance they are ideal textiles for travel towels.
While both hemp and flax linen textiles have been woven and worn since at least 8000 BC, both are making a well-deserved comeback. This is due to the highly desirable qualities the finished textiles have to offer as well as the positive environmental aspects of the plants. When grown responsibly, neither requires pesticides nor artificial irrigation, they grow very quickly, and they rehabilitate the soil.
They are the fibers of the future.
Lava towels are tightly woven with long smooth anti-static fibers so the sand, dirt and leaves remain in the outdoors instead of on your towel, on you, in your pack or in your home.
Flax and hemp are very easy to care for. Simply machine wash your Lava towels in cold water, no hotter than 60 degrees F.
Tumble dry them on low heat or hang them to dry.
To achieve maximum absorbency, avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets.
"Researchers find that over 1,000 metric tons of microplastic fall on 11 protected areas in the US annually. That’s the equivalent to over 120 million plastic water bottles.”
Matt Simon. “Plastic Rain is the New Acid Rain.” Wired Magazine. June 11, 2020.
The good news is, we can turn this around. Microplastics are tiny fragments from plastic products, and fibers shed from our synthetic clothing and gear. By simply opting to use a plant-fiber Lava towel instead of a microfiber towel, you can prevent up to 12 credit cards worth of microplastics from entering our air, water and soil every year.
Flax and hemp require only 3% of the water cotton requires to grow and both are carbon-sink plants.
To go a step beyond, our flax and hemp are Masters of Linen® certified European Flax® which guarantees no pesticides, no artificial irrigation, no GMOs and no defoliants were used or created in the cultivation and production.
How do I care for my Woven Wonders hand towel?
It’s simple! Machine or hand wash in water up to 60 degrees with like colors on a gentle spin. Hang to dry or tumble dry on low heat. Remove promptly.
One of the greatest things about hemp and linen textiles is the more you use them the softer and more supple they will become!
Is the Woven Wonders hand towel quick to dry?
Yes, the woven hand towel dries significantly faster than your average bath towel! It also dries twice as fast as microfiber per ounce of water absorbed.
How absorbent is the Woven Wonders hand towel?
Very! The Woven Wonders hand towel absorbs up to 50% more water than a microfiber towel of the same size!
Is the Woven Wonders hand towel packable?
Absolutely! It weighs in at only 2.4oz and folds down to a 1.5" x 3 x 4.5" cube.
Should I expect my Woven Wonders hand towel to shrink when washed?
All products in the Woven Wonders line are pre-washed and preshrunk. Therefore, if you continue to care for it by washing it in cold water and drying on low heat, it will not shrink.
Do I need to wash my Woven Wonders hand towel before I use it?
Nope! All products in the Woven Wonders line are pre-washed and ready to be used right out of the package!
What are these fuzzy spots and variations in the weave of my towel?
One of the most prized qualities of linen and hemp is the way it reflects nature – perfectly imperfect. Unlike manmade fibers and plant fibers like cotton, linen and hemp fibers meander from thick to thin with nubs and slubs throughout the textile. The variation enhances the texture and does not affect the integrity of the material.
We look over our linen and hemp prior to crafting our towels and after every towel is created to assure there are no variations beyond what is considered natural for bast fiber textiles.
